Joann McCoy Carr died Monday, April 3rd, 2017. Joann was a beloved mother, aunt, sister, and friend. Joann was born in Sumter, SC and graduated from Edmunds High School. After graduating from Greensboro College in North Carolina, she taught school in Orangeburg, SC, before marrying E.C. and starting a family.
Graveside services will be held 3:00 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Riverside Cemetery directed by Cooper Funeral Home. Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 p.m. Thursday prior to the service at Main Street United Methodist Church.
Joann was a born teacher – she was always ready to share knowledge or a lesson. She loved the beach and the house at DeBordieu and God’s creation found there – the turtles, shells, plants, flowers, and trees. Joann loved purple; almost every day, she would wear some item of purple clothes or jewelry. Joann loved her family with a fierce devotion and commitment and would do anything for them. She was generous with her time, money, and love. Her Christian faith came first – it remained the center of her life to the very end.
We are grateful that Joann was able to live fully and faithfully and did not suffer long before she left us. But we will miss her – her laughter, spunk and strong will, sitting and talking with her, playing games, and drinking coffee. If you were watching the sky in Dillon on the night she died, you would have seen the most magnificent purple sunset – a final gift from our beloved mother, aunt, sister, and friend.
Joann is survived by her children: Elam Carlton Carr III (Lynn), William Howard Carr (Lydia), both of Dillon; daughter, Nancy Katherine Carr (Gerald Altman) of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren: Ashley Sims (Cole) of Chapel Hill, NC, William Carr of Dillon, Marian Funderburk (Josh) of Augusta, GA, Jim Carr of Dillon, Alex Green and Ellen Green of Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren: Colston Sims and Benjamin Sims of Chapel Hill; brother John McCoy (Carolyn) of Brevard, NC; sister-in-law Pat Carr of Farmville, NC; brother-in-law William (Bill) Carr of Philadelphia PA; nieces and nephews: Mandy Phillips (Jeff) of Santa Barbara, CA, and Selena McCoy Carpenter (Rand) of Nairobi, Kenya; Laura Carr Hughes of Farmville, NC, James Carr (Angel) of Hong Kong; great-nieces and nephews: Pierce Phillips of Santa Barbara, CA, Reid Carpenter, and Sam Carpenter of Nairobi, Kenya; Corbett Hughes of Farmville, NC; Bartlett Carr of Hong Kong.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, E.C. Carr, her parents, Katherine and JW McCoy, and sister, Katherine McCoy.
Memorial gifts can be made to Precept Ministries International, 7324 Noah Reid Road, Chattanooga TN 37421, or Samaritan’s Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NIV)
